Getting a new laptop at work this week .... No trackpad, just that eraserhead thing. Time to learn a new skill

@atmasphere People either love or hate those things. I'm in the later camp

Have always hated them too ... But in order to get a small and light machine (thinkpad x61) I am taking the hit. I usually have it deactivated ... It's the only input option outside of a mouse on ghe current model

Heh. Seems I am in the minority. I've always detested touchpads, and much preferred a trackpoint. The Dell D830 I have (and the D800 before it) has both, and I always use the touchpoint. The lack of a touchpoint on my new MacBook Pro is one of the things that drove me insane until I got a Bluetooth mouse for it (the other being that Apple still doesn't have a physical right mouse button, but I've griped about that enough already...).

Really? One of the things I loved most about the Air was the pad. Scrolling, zooming, swiping... All so easy.

Yes, really. 1) I've always hated touch pads. They are not accurate, only good for gross movements. 2) The touchpad on the MBP is a lot less tall than the one on the Air. So using the two-finger scroll to go vertically through a tall web page means lots of swipe, move back to top, swipe, repeat ad nausium. And two-fingers+button for right click is just not comfortable or quick enough to me, especially when using apps that make heavy use of right-click context menus. The external Bluetooth mouse made the MBP actually usable for me... I'm sure you saw my bitching about it prior to getting that mouse here on Jaiku.

Ah. On the Air, 2 fingers = right-click, no probs. For precise operation a la PShop I would never use anything other than a real mouse. With a browser box like the Air though, the pad was spectacular for me.

Yes, well, Photoshop is one of my main apps given I got it for photography stuff... :)

my first experience with a laptop was my dad's Thinkpad from about 10 years ago, and it had a trackpoint (don't even remember if it had a touch pad). and now i have two Thinkpads. i use the trackpoint way more than the pad, and think that devices like Eee would work much better with a trackpoint (the touch pad on the Eee is so small and inaccurate it drove me crazy)

Love the trackpoint - I can't stand the pad!

I cannot stand that dang trackpoint. Blah; give me the touchpad any day of the week. I used to have one with my old Pentium I desktop; only swapped it out to play Starcraft.
