Haven't even read the link, but that's just flat out
fear-mongering. The Internet was not designed to be just used on
desktop terminals; its a network. If the network's backbone needs
to be updated to address more people being there, IPv6 is here and
ready to go.
@arjw The prof. seems to be
addressing more the "hacker nature" will be dumbed down because of
locked-in gadgets such as the iPhone. Either way, a bunch of
crock
OK, just read the article; its misguided. The premise that the
user experience of mobiled devices, specifically their browsers,
will kill the Internet is terribly misguided. Yes, there needs to
be better browsers, but his conclusions as to why mobile web
doesn't work as nicely as desktop web, especically in the
participitory aspect of the Internet is just silly.
Thinking about how to phrase a counterpoint article to
this...for the good of the Internet :P
Its not that my blog isn't good enough, its that I don;t just
want to ramble on about anything. Making a concise point makes a
better case for understanding that just throwing some words
together.
Plus, I already addressed part of this in an article that
just
went up today
@arjw Mobile browsers suck
now but it will improve. You have clever people
hacking away at new browsers and other internet (web != internet)
apps for phones
@edy Interesting link and yes
there are limitations physical and corporate, to "appliances" that
can cramp creativity. He does see to have a lot of faith in the
"community" which is nice. Still, I wouldn't bother reading his
book after this ...
this is one reason i've stopped reading most mainstream media.
Its either fear mogering or so full of half truths. There devices
have actually lead to more innovation. The security issue he speaks
about is an entirely seperate problem which can be solved by
education and technology.

If users get used to these gadgets, is it dumbing them down? :)
